| ETOPS |
Extended Twin Jet Operations. ETOPS rules limit how far
twin-engine jets can stray from airfields as they fly over the
poles or across oceans. They also require strict maintenance
regimes, extra reserve fuel and additional cargo-fire-suppression
equipment. |

Flight Information Region - a defined airspace within which
flight information and alerting services are provided. Great Britain
is divided into the London and Scottish FIRs centred on Swanwick
and Prestwick respectively. |

Flight Level - an altitude measured above sea level based on
a standard pressure setting of 1013.25mb, eg FL 250 = 25,000
feet with the aircraft's altimeter at the standard pressure setting. |
